When is the best time to get elope in Big Sur?

BEST TIME OF YEAR TO HAVE YOUR BIG SUR ELOPEMENT

  • Summer: Summer is hands-down the most popular season in Big Sur. in the morning there’s a ton of fog that typically stays until mid-day, giving you the option for a California moody vibe, or if you’re dreaming of a magical sunset golden hour and clear skies you can opt for a ceremony in the afternoon. Better yet, do both!
  • Fall: I really love fall in Big Sur – first of all, the foliage colors are extra warm and earthy! The weather is still warm, the fog in the morning is lifted or gone, crowds are smaller so if having more privacy is important to you then all of these reasons together make fall the perfect season to elope in Big Sur.
  • Winter: California does get winters and on the coast, it can get quite cold and rainy but if you’re looking for some moody coastal weather and minimal people then wintertime in Big Sur might just be perfect when planning your elopement or intimate wedding.
  • Spring: Spring is another season I absolutely love in Big Sur. The weather is starting to warm up, all though morning and evenings can still be chilly – the scenery is worth it. Wildflowers are blooming, everything just starts to feel refreshed and tourists haven’t flocked to this gorgeous area just yet so it’s still likely you’ll find plenty of privacy in less known areas if that is something important to you. However, it is important to have a backup plan, maybe some all-wheel-drive since the coast can be known for landslides + muddy backroads.

Best Time of Day to Elope in Big Sur:

The best time of day for a Big Sur elopement depends on various factors, including lighting, weather, and personal preferences. Consider the specific location within Big Sur, as the coastline offers a variety of stunning backdrops, including cliffs, beaches, and redwood forests. Check the weather forecast for the time of year you plan to elope, and be aware of any special events or popular times for visitors. Regardless of the time you choose, the key is to be flexible and have contingency plans in case of unexpected weather changes or other factors. Here are some considerations:

Sunrise:

  • Pros: Soft morning light, fewer crowds, and a tranquil atmosphere.
  • Cons: Early wake-up, cooler temperatures, and potential for morning fog.

Midday:

  • Pros: Consistent lighting, warmer temperatures, and great visibility.
  • Cons: Busier with visitors, harsh shadows, and less dramatic lighting for photography.

Sunset:

  • Pros: Golden hour light, warm tones, and a romantic setting.
  • Cons: Can be crowded, cooler temperatures, and changing lighting conditions.

Late Afternoon:

  • Pros: Beautiful warm light without the early morning wake-up.
  • Cons: Slightly busier than the morning, but usually quieter than sunset.
