Out of all of the beautiful states to get married in, why elope in Washington is kind of a no brainer but if you’ve been here you probably already know that or are about to find out. The hub of the great Pacific Northwest, Washington doesn’t fall short in epic locations to say I do. When you elope in Washington, you truly can have it all – from amazing National Parks, huge mountain ranges, enchanting forest, rugged coastlines, beaches to huge cliffs in the desert.

How to legally get married in Washington State

• Washington has a three-day waiting period.
• The Washington marriage license is valid for 60 days.
• A Washington marriage license costs $69 and is nonrefundable.
• You can obtain a marriage license from any county, and it is valid in any county in washington. you just have to return the marriage license to the county where you obtained the license, and you can return it to the county by mail or in person. Washington has a three-day waiting period. you can apply online (for example, in king county, where seattle is located) in order to expedite the process. the marriage license expires after 60 days. 
• Officiant – Washington requires an ordained officiant to sign your marriage license. you can hire an elopement officiant who’s up for whatever adventure you have planned, or you can ask a friend or family member. getting ordained is surprisingly easy – so if there’s someone in your life who you want to have the honor of marrying you, all they have to do is go to ULC.ORG, sign up, and then they can perform marriages in any us state.
• Witnesses – You need two witnesses to sign your marriage license, but don’t panic if you weren’t planning on inviting guests! The only requirement is that your witnesses be over 18, so any of your vendors can sign. you can also find two people at the trailhead or at your ceremony spot to be your witnesses – most people are stoked to help out!

When to Elope in Washington

Choose a date for your elopement:

Choosing the time of year to elope in Washington is really dependent on the season and scenery you want to get married in and lets be honest, the weather in washington can be a little unpredictable but hey if you’ve ever seen someone get married in a little rain, if fucking gorgous! Summer and Fall are my favorite season here in the northwestern part of our state but if your looking to get married in the eastern part of our state youll probably be looking more for the late winter to spring time. Check out my favorite places to elope in washington below for more details on washingtons seasons!

IN THE MOUNTAINS:

Summer: Summer is the best season to elope in washingtons mountains and with the wildflowers blooming in the North Cascades and Mount Rainier from late July to late August this makes it prime time for good weather and smell good, gorgeous 360’ views. Since summer is the parks peak visitation season – I always recommend to couples, getting married on a weekday and/or in the morning are going to be the best ways to avoid the crowds.

Fall: Fall foliage begins in the beginning of october so if your looking for those really pretty fall colors this is the perfect time but keep in mind that into late October/early November we tend to have the first snow in our mountains.

Winter: Want a winter wonderland elopement experience? You’ve got it – however certain areas with higher elevations can begin to have road closure so just being prepared with a back up plan is always just a good idea. Crowd level are lower, allowing more flexibility for weekday elopements.

Spring: Spring time can really go either way sinces its kind of an in-between season for us here in Washington state so its best to come prepared for any kind of weather. Crowds are a not as busy this time of year and you can expect still beautiful snow capped mountains.

ON THE COAST & PENINSULA:

Summer: While it is peak season in some popular areas like the olympic national park, hwy 101, h.o.h rainforest so its still recommended to try and plan your elopement on a weekday to avoid the crowds – the summer time on the coast/Olympic Peninsula is gorgeous!!

Fall: I feel like you cant beat the fall colors, ruggrd coastlines and a little moody pnw – weather can be a little warmer but if you head closer on the coast of hwy 101 but be prepared for some chilly winds as night falls – dont worry you can find some pretty great hot springs to warm yourself right back up!

Winter: If you want to escape some of the winter weather then plan on heading over to the coast but dreaming of a Winter wonderlands, stay on the mountain side

Spring: Bring on beautiful blooming flowers and the fresh air – just like most parts of Washington the weather in Spring can be a little iffy so just prepared for a little of everything.

EASTERN WASHINGTON:

Summer: Wait? Desert in Washington!?! Its true – just head over to Eastern Washington. Summers tends to get hot in most areas but in the early and last summer months, you can find nice warm and long lasting days for maximum fun.

Fall: Crisp mornings and warm afternoons, fall is for sure my favorite time of year in Eastern Washington – all of the fall, warm colors are breathtaking over here

Winter: Want to get married in the Winter months but don’t want a snowy elopement then Eastern Washington should be high on your list for locations, im not saying itll be warm but its the warmer more dry side of Washington

Spring: Let the warmth spread over you as winter gives way to spring. the flowers bloom, the nights are still cool, but the days show a promise of sunny potential

Where to Elope in Washington

Best Washington Elopement Locations

Washington is known for its mountainous landscapes and some of the u.s’s most epic national parks but that’s not all that the pacific northwest has to offer. location is everything and it shouldn’t just be because you saw a pretty picture on instagram, the place you choose to get married should make you feel something. here are some of my favorite places to Elope in washington.

NORTH CASCADES NATIONAL PARK

With its snow-capped mountains, more than 120 alpine lakes and 400 miles of trails, the North Cascades National Park is a gorgeous backdrop for your wedding. Out of all of Washingtons National Parks, the North Cascades is the least visited which totally blows my mind.

Pass/Permit Required: You are going to need to get a SPECIAL USE PERMIT for your elopement/wedding.

How to get a permit:

1. Fill out a special park uses application – you can obtain your permit up to a year in advance and typically take 4 weeks to process so I always recommend getting this done asap.
2. Pay the $50 non-refundable special use permit application fee on the NP’S WEBSITE.
3. The national park will email you your permit draft to review and sign.
4. Send back the draft permit and theyll send your official wedding permit – do not forget to bring this on your elopement day!

MT. BAKER:

No matter what season you decide on the views will never disappoint. during the spring there are views of wildflowers and during the winter months, there is snow that will feel like a winter wonderland. the amazing thing about Mt. Baker is there are multiple places that are really close to the highway to stop and take pictures or exchange your vows. 

• Heather Meadows:
  • Heather Meadows is a beautiful area near the Mount Baker Ski Area, known for its wildflowers in the summer and stunning alpine scenery. Picture-perfect views of Mount Baker and surrounding peaks make this a romantic location.
• Artist Point:
  • Located at the very end of mt baker highway and will get you some of the most insane 360-degree views of Mt. Baker and Mt. Shuksan with an elevation of more than 5,000 feet. With all of these breath-taking views comes with many locations to say your vows including one spot that is a nature-made isle- how legit is that. This location is also easily accessible if others were joining your special day with you.
• Chain Lakes Loop:
  • This loop trail takes you through alpine meadows and offers views of several lakes with Mount Baker in the background. The scenery is particularly stunning in the summer when wildflowers are in bloom.
• Table Mountain:
  • Table Mountain is a challenging hike, but it rewards you with incredible panoramic views of Mount Baker, Mount Shuksan, and the surrounding peaks. It’s a more secluded option for an intimate elopement.
• Bagley Lakes Trail:
  • The Bagley Lakes Trail takes you through a beautiful alpine landscape with views of Bagley Lakes and Mount Baker. It’s a relatively easy hike with fantastic photo opportunities.
• Mount Baker Scenic Byway:
  • The Mount Baker Scenic Byway offers numerous pullouts and viewpoints along the highway, allowing you to capture the beauty of Mount Baker without extensive hiking. Picture Lake is a popular stop for reflections of Mount Shuksan.
• Firelookouts:
  • A historic fire lookout perched at an elevation of 6,521 feet. Offering panoramic views of surrounding peaks, alpine meadows, and Baker Lake, the lookout provides a rustic and remote retreat for visitors seeking a unique mountain experience. Accessible by a moderately challenging trail, Winchester Mountain Fire Lookout stands as a testament to the region’s fire monitoring history while providing an unparalleled vantage point in the heart of the North Cascades.

NORTH CASCADES HWY 20:

This location is perfect for those who need a wheelchair-friendly (ADA friendly) option without sacrificing the amazing views. Only a quarter-mile off of the pullout, with a paved walkway you can see the amazing ridgeline of mountains in the distance. 

• Cascade Pass:
  • A popular and accessible location, Cascade Pass provides breathtaking views of glaciers, peaks, and valleys. It’s a moderately challenging hike, but the views are well worth it.
• Sahale Arm:
  • Accessed via the Cascade Pass Trail, Sahale Arm offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, including Johannesburg Mountain and Sahale Peak.
• Diablo Lake Overlook:
  • Located off of Highway 20 in the North Cascades. The stunning turquoise blue color of Diablo Lake is absolutely one of the most gorgeous things you will ever see. Along with the color of the lake, the natural scenery, and the snowcapped mountains. The main lookout that you drive by when on hwy 20 is now closed- but I have a secret spot that is just a 3-mile hike with insane views, or you could always exchange your vows at the bottom of the lake. Across from diablo is a cute resort called ross lake resort- that is only accessible by boat, which who doesn’t love a secluded resort!?
• Maple Pass Loop:
  • A loop trail that takes you through alpine meadows, offering expansive views of the North Cascades, including peaks, glaciers, and wildflowers in season.
• Washington Pass Overlook:
  • Located along the North Cascades Highway, the Washington Pass Overlook provides sweeping views of Liberty Bell Mountain and the surrounding peaks. It’s easily accessible by car. This location is perfect for those who need a wheelchair-friendly (ADA friendly) option without sacrificing the amazing views. Only a quarter-mile off of the pullout, with a paved walkway you can see the amazing ridgeline of mountains in the distance. 
• Hidden Lake Lookout:
  • While the trail to Hidden Lake Lookout is challenging, reaching the historic fire lookout provides stunning views of Hidden Lake and the surrounding peaks.
• Desolation Peak:
  • A more remote and challenging option, the Desolation Peak trail offers incredible views of the North Cascades and is known for its historic fire lookout at the summit.

MOUNT RAINIER NATIONAL PARK

An iconic Washington National Park, Mount Rainer has everything: stunning views, miles of trails, lush forests and fields of wildflowers. It’s accessible all year, so you if you’re dreaming of a fall or winter wedding – go for it. You’ll need a special permit to get married here.

Pass/Permit Required: You are going to need to get a special use permit for your elopement/wedding.

How to get a permit:

1. Fill out a special park uses application at least 4 weeks prior and pay the $60 non-refundable fee. You can submit a request less than four weeks but make sure to contact the permit coordinator directly for an expedited permit.
2. The National Park Coordinator will email you your permit draft to review and sign.
3. Send back the draft permit and they’ll send your official special use permit – do not forget to bring this on your wedding day!

SUNRISE VISITORS CENTER:

With an elevation of 6,400 feet, you will get 360 degree views of all the valleys including Mt. Rainier and Mount Adams. Sunrise is the highest point at Mt Rainier that can be reached by vehicle. So if you’re not into hiking up a mountain you can still get those amazing views.

• Sunrise Point: Spectacular views of the sunrise over the mountain.
• Emmons Vista: Overlooks the Emmons Glacier and provides a stunning setting.
• Burroughs Mountain Trail:
  • Description: This trail takes you to Burroughs Mountain, offering spectacular views of Mount Rainier, Emmons Glacier, and the surrounding valleys.
  • Highlights: Alpine landscapes, panoramic views, and the opportunity to explore multiple Burroughs Mountain viewpoints.
• Fremont Lookout Trail:
  • Description: A moderately easy hike to Fremont Lookout, where you’ll have stunning views of Mount Rainier and the surrounding wilderness.
  • Highlights: Historic fire lookout, wildflowers, and a more intimate setting compared to some of the busier trails.
• Sourdough Ridge Trail:
  • Description: Sourdough Ridge Trail is a relatively easy trail with outstanding views of Mount Rainier, the Tatoosh Range, and the Sunrise area.
  • Highlights: Expansive meadows, wildflowers, and the chance to enjoy breathtaking views with a relatively short hike.
• Dege Peak Trail:
  • Description: Dege Peak offers panoramic views of Mount Rainier, the Emmons Glacier, and surrounding peaks. It’s a moderate hike with a rewarding summit.
  • Highlights: Alpine scenery, wildflowers, and a less crowded atmosphere compared to some of the more popular trails.
• Sunrise Rim Trail:
  • Description: This trail takes you along the rim of the Sunrise area, providing excellent views of Mount Rainier, meadows, and surrounding peaks.
  • Highlights: Varied landscapes, opportunities for wildlife sightings, and a trail that can be tailored to different lengths based on your preferences.

PARIDISE VISITOR CENTER:

The most epic mountain views with so many gorgeous flowers. The cool thing about paradise visitor center is that there a multiple little hikes that lead you to cool destinations that all give you different feels depending on how you plan on exchanging your vows. Half of the trails are either paved or stroller/wheelchair accessible so if you plan on having other people attend it is fairly easy for them to get there.

• Skyline Trail:
  • Description: Skyline Trail is one of the most popular trails in Paradise, offering stunning panoramic views of Mount Rainier, wildflower meadows, and the surrounding landscape.
  • Highlights: Panorama Point, Myrtle Falls, and the gorgeous alpine scenery make this trail a fantastic choice for elopements.
• Nisqually Vista Loop:
  • Description: This moderate loop trail provides views of the Nisqually Glacier and Mount Rainier. It’s a shorter option, allowing for an intimate and picturesque elopement setting.
  • Highlights: Nisqually Glacier, subalpine meadows, and diverse flora.
• Pinnacle Peak Trail:
  • Description: Pinnacle Peak Trail is a moderately challenging hike that leads to stunning views of Mount Rainier, the Tatoosh Range, and the surrounding valleys.
  • Highlights: Alpine landscapes, rocky terrain, and a sense of seclusion make this trail a unique choice for elopements.
• Deadhorse Creek Trail:
  • Description: This trail takes you through wildflower meadows, providing opportunities for a more secluded elopement experience. It’s a bit less crowded than some of the more popular trails in Paradise.
  • Highlights: Wildflowers, views of Mount Rainier, and a peaceful atmosphere.
• Mazama Ridge:
  • Description: Mazama Ridge offers stunning views of Mount Rainier and the Tatoosh Range. The trail takes you through subalpine meadows, providing a picturesque backdrop for your elopement.
  • Highlights: Expansive views, wildflowers, and a sense of being surrounded by the beauty of nature.

STEVENS CANYON:

7 miles and about 700ft of elevation gain and past all of the beautiful waterfalls that call for some beautiful pictures along the way. you can either go to the stevens canyon road area which is easy and paved if that is more you pace, but if your up for the hike go all 7 miles. Box canyon is along the way which has a glacier and a u-shape canyon. The amazing rock walls through the canyon is a sight to see for sure.

• Silver Falls Loop Trail:
  • Description: This moderate loop takes you to the stunning Silver Falls, which cascades over a series of rocky ledges. The lush forest and the waterfall make for a picturesque setting.
  • Highlights: Silver Falls, dense forest, and the scenic Stevens Canyon.
• Grove of the Patriarchs Trail:
  • Description: This easy, family-friendly trail leads you through an ancient forest with towering old-growth trees. A suspension bridge adds to the enchanting atmosphere.
  • Highlights: Giant trees, a suspension bridge, and a serene forest setting.
• Box Canyon Loop Trail:
  • Description: This short loop provides views of the deep and narrow Box Canyon, where the turbulent waters of the Muddy Fork Cowlitz River flow through a narrow gorge.
  • Highlights: Box Canyon, views of the river, and interesting geological formations.
• Stevens Van Trump Historical Monument Trail:
  • Description: This trail takes you to the memorial for P.B. Van Trump and Hazard Stevens, the first known people to successfully summit Mount Rainier. The trail offers panoramic views.
  • Highlights: Historical monument, panoramic views of Stevens Canyon, and potential wildlife sightings.
• Reflection Lakes Trail:
  • Description: Although Reflection Lakes is accessible by car, there are walking trails around the lakes that offer beautiful views of Mount Rainier and the surrounding landscape.
  • Highlights: Reflection Lakes, stunning views of Mount Rainier, and the opportunity for a serene lakeside elopement.

NISQUALLY ENTRANCE:

While the Nisqually Entrance at Mount Rainier is known for its accessibility and beautiful scenery, it’s essential to note that many of the trails starting from this entrance are relatively short. Here are five trails near the Nisqually Entrance that can offer scenic locations for an elopement:

• Nisqually Vista Loop:
  • Description: This short loop provides stunning views of Mount Rainier and the Nisqually Glacier. It’s an easy trail, making it accessible for all skill levels.
  • Highlights: Panoramic views, wildflowers, and the Nisqually Glacier.
• Kautz Creek Trail:
  • Description: The Kautz Creek Trail is a relatively short trail that takes you through a peaceful forest and along the Kautz Creek.
  • Highlights: Tranquil creek, forested surroundings, and a sense of seclusion.
• Lower Chenuis Falls Trail:
  • Description: This short trail leads to Lower Chenuis Falls, a beautiful waterfall in the Nisqually River valley.
  • Highlights: Waterfall, forested trail, and the Nisqually River.
• Twin Firs Trail:
  • Description: The Twin Firs Trail is a short loop through the forest near Longmire. It’s an easy hike suitable for all skill levels.
  • Highlights: Old-growth forest, peaceful surroundings, and the Twin Firs.
• Trail of the Shadows:
  • Description: Located near Longmire, the Trail of the Shadows is an interpretive trail that takes you through the historic site and old-growth forest.
  • Highlights: Historical elements, old-growth trees, and a relatively easy walk.

CABIN OR CAMPGROUND:

The cool thing about this is- you chose it. You can pick any campground or cabin and there will be endless areas that you can have your special day just how you want it. You can choose somewhere special where you used to go camping with your family when you were younger, or quaint little cabin in the woods with the best trees in a secluded area to exchange your vows. Locations like this also allows somewhere for you and family to stay if you are having others join you.

NEAR SEATTLE

Within Seattle or just a 1-2 hour drive from Seattle, there there are a variety of stunning landscapes: meadows, forests and snow-covered mountains. It can get crowded here, so if you’re looking for an intimate setting, weekdays are best.

Pass/Permit Required: Depending on where you are looking to get married, you may need to get a special use permit – sometimes information can be a little confusing or hard to find so its easiest to call and ask about specific locations or ask your friendly elopement photographer. — thats me!

IN THE CITY:

Just because you’re eloping, doesn’t mean you have to do it somewhere remote in nature – having a city elopement or intimate wedding is a whole vibe in itself. With amazing views of the puget sound, old downtown city building, tons of super cute hidden parks and intimate venues with skyline views.

SNOQUALMIE PASS:

There is something so magical about the snow. of course you can go visit snoqualmie pass during the summer as well and still get the amazing views of the mountains and the cascades. The peaks and valleys mixed with all the greenery, ponds and lakes make for some amazing views. Wintertime is of course snow dusted trees and mountains that make it a whimsical experience.

MOUNTAIN LOOP HWY:

The scenic route starts in Darrington and ends in Granite Falls and you will have views of the Cascades, amazing lakes, lush forest, waterfalls and even a old mining town. You will find all sorts of different hikes and campgrounds here as well. During winter months due to its lower elevation there is usually little to no snow.

NORTH BEND:

This area is covered with all the wooded areas, has lots of lakes, trees and of course the mountains. Depending on what you want you can get many different views from North Bend. Wanting to hike to amazing views of a blue lake and the green pnw forest or a more casual grassy field with a mountain range views north.

OLYMPIC PENINSULA

Known for its rugged coastlines, enchanting forests and stunning mountains, Olympic National park has the most diverse range of landscapes and views. Any time of year is a great time of year to elope here. The beaches and hot springs are accessible year-round.

Pass/Permit Required: You are going to need to get a special use permit if you are planning on having your wedding at the national park but there are lots of places outside of the national park like blm’s that you can get married at with little to know extra permitting fees.

HURRICANE RIDGE:

Hurricane Ridge is just steps away from your car with the most amazing views. In the winter months it is covered in feet of snow but in the summer, it is all melted with just the tops of the mountains capped with snow all of the pnw trees.

• Hurricane Hill Trail:
  • Description: The Hurricane Hill Trail is a popular hike that takes you to Hurricane Ridge’s summit. The trail provides breathtaking views of the Olympic Mountains, Port Angeles, and the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
  • Highlights: Alpine meadows, wildflowers, and a stunning vista at the summit.
• Sunrise Point:
  • Description: Sunrise Point is easily accessible by car and offers sweeping views of the surrounding mountains, including Mount Olympus. It’s a picturesque location with the potential for beautiful sunrise or sunset ceremonies.
  • Highlights: Panoramic views, easy accessibility, and an ideal spot for capturing the changing colors of the sky.
• Klahhane Ridge:
  • Description: The Klahhane Ridge Trail is a moderate to strenuous hike that leads to high alpine meadows and ridge views. It’s a more secluded option, providing a sense of intimacy for your elopement.
  • Highlights: Expansive views, wildflowers, and a sense of remoteness.
• Lillian Ridge:
  • Description: Lillian Ridge is accessible via the Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center or the Sunrise Ridge Trail. The ridge offers panoramic views of the Olympic Mountains and is surrounded by alpine meadows.
  • Highlights: Mountain vistas, wildflowers, and potential wildlife sightings.
• Huron Peak Overlook:
  • Description: The Huron Peak Overlook is located along Hurricane Ridge Road and provides stunning views of the surrounding peaks. It’s an easily accessible spot for an elopement with minimal hiking.
  • Highlights: Convenient location, mountain views, and easy accessibility.

LAKE CRESCENT:

Lake Crescent is known for its glacier–fed lake that is crystal clear, surrounded by amazing alpines, lodging, viewpoints and hiking. There are many different places to elope depending on the vibe that you are going for. It offers lodging which is nice if you are wanting a place to get ready and have friends and family stay. 

LAKE CUSHMAN:

Something about a calm peaceful lake with mountain views, grand trees and some beautiful rocks, am I wrong? The cool thing about lake cushman is you basically get it all in one location. Tall trees, water and mountain views, the good ol’ pnw. This is one of my favorite locations for camping elopements.

HWY 101:

HWY 101 will give you so many different opportunities to pull off and do the dang thing since its over 350 miles long. To the most beautiful trees and greenery to the ocean- the opportunities are endless.

• Ruby Beach:
  • Description: Ruby Beach is known for its sea stacks, tide pools, and driftwood-strewn shoreline. It’s a stunning and easily accessible location on the Olympic Peninsula.
  • Highlights: Dramatic coastal scenery, sea stacks, and beautiful sunsets.
• Hoh Rainforest:
  • Description: One of the most magical places ever covered in hundreds of years old mossy oaks, the moss drapes down from the trees giving you an epic pnw feeling, ferns, and all the natural beauty that washington has to offer.
  • Highlights: Ancient trees, vibrant greenery, and a unique rainforest atmosphere.
• Lake Quinault:
  • Description: Nestled in the Olympic National Forest, Lake Quinault offers a serene and picturesque setting with views of the lake and surrounding mountains.
  • Highlights: Tranquil lake, reflections, and the opportunity for lakeside ceremonies.
• La Push Beaches (First Beach, Second Beach, Third Beach):
  • Description: The beaches at La Push, including First Beach, Second Beach, and Third Beach, offer rugged beauty with sea stacks, driftwood, and stunning coastal views.
  • Highlights: Coastal landscapes, sea stacks, and the rhythmic sounds of the Pacific Ocean.
• Cape Flattery:
  • Description: Cape Flattery is the northwesternmost point of the contiguous United States. A short hike leads to viewpoints overlooking sea cliffs and the Pacific Ocean.
