That’s me, Rylee!

One of my favorite things about eloping is that there are no rules! You can get married in your backyard, or you can hop on a plane and fly across the globe. If you’re dreaming of an epic wedding day, traveling internationally can be an amazing way to combine that with your honeymoon, and spend some time exploring! here are some of the best countries to elope in, and some tips for choosing just one for your intimate destination wedding.

How to Choose a Country to Elope In

Needless to say, there are a lot of countries to choose from – so how do you decide? With so many incredible places in the world, choosing a country to elope in can feel both exciting and overwhelming. The good news? There’s no “best” destination – only the one that feels most aligned with you and your partner. From landscapes and weather to travel logistics and budget, a few key factors can help narrow your options and turn your dream into a clear, confident plan. Let’s break down what actually matters when choosing where to say your vows.

THINK ABOUT SCENERY

The first step I recommend is thinking about what kind of landscape you imagine yourself in, and what you picture yourself doing on your elopement day. Do you want to sip Mai Tais and spend a week relaxing on the beach? Do you want to hike and explore and see as much as possible? Do you want your elopement ceremony to be up in the mountains, or deep in the jungle? Dream big – and talk with your partner to figure out what feels right.

Once you’ve come up with a vision of your elopement day and what kind of scenery you want to be immersed in, think backward and come up with some countries that have what you’re looking for! Greece has beaches, Iceland has epic hikes. Nepal is known for its mountains and the Maldives for its crystal blue waters. Come up with a list of places that match your vision, and do some more research on each one!

CONSIDER THE WEATHER

Some couples have an elopement date set in stone before they begin planning, while others choose their date later. If you’re part of the first group, and maybe you have a date that holds significance for you or a time of year that you can take time off work, think about what the weather is like around the world.

When the northern hemisphere has warm summers, most places in the southern hemisphere are cold – and vice versa! So make sure you know what to expect when it comes to weather at your elopement destination.

DECIDE ON A BUDGET

Elopement Budgets can vary so much because one of the perks of eloping is that you get to decide what to spend money on! one of your biggest expenses for an international elopement will likely be travel costs – but how much you spend while you’re there can depend a lot on the country. Come up with a budget, and decide which countries can accommodate.

Switzerland (and most European countries) are notoriously expensive, while places like Thailand and Colombia attract lots of travelers with tighter budgets. There’s no right or wrong way to elope – it’s all about figuring out what’s important to you – whether it’s fine dining and luxury resorts, or rugged adventures and backcountry explorations.

Tips for a destination elopement

Eloping abroad has some additional challenges – so here are some things to think about when you’re planning – but that’s part of what makes it so special. From navigating marriage laws to coordinating travel and logistics, a little preparation goes a long way. These tips will help you plan an international elopement that feels smooth, intentional, and focused on the experience rather than the stress.

LOOK UP LOCAL MARRIAGE LAWS

Marriage laws vary so much between countries. some places make getting a marriage license easy, while in others, it’s a lengthy and complicated process. to make sure you’re legally married, make sure to do some research!

I usually recommend that couples do the paperwork at home – this makes things a lot easier, and that way you won’t have to think about it on your elopement day.

One of the most important decisions you’ll make when planning a destination elopement is whether you want your ceremony to be legally binding in the country you’re traveling to or symbolic, with the legal paperwork handled elsewhere. Both options are completely valid – and neither makes your elopement any less meaningful.

The right choice depends on your priorities, timeline, and how simple (or complex) you want the planning process to be.

A legal destination elopement means you complete all marriage requirements in the country where you’re getting married. This often includes residency rules, translated documents, waiting periods, or local officiants.

Some countries make this process fairly straightforward, while others can be time-consuming and bureaucratic. If being legally married in that exact location matters deeply to you, this route can be worth the extra steps – just be prepared to plan well in advance.

A symbolic destination elopement means you legally get married at home (either before or after your trip) and treat your destination ceremony as the emotional, intentional experience.

This option offers far more flexibility. You don’t have to worry about foreign marriage laws, paperwork translations, or strict timelines – which allows you to focus entirely on the experience, the location, and the meaning of the day.

Most couples choose this route because it’s simpler, less stressful, and allows for complete creative freedom.

Why Most Couples Choose a Symbolic Elopement Abroad

Symbolic elopements remove almost all of the red tape that comes with getting married internationally. Without worrying about residency requirements, document translations, or waiting periods, couples can focus entirely on the experience – the location, the timing, and the moments that matter most.

For couples who want flexibility, privacy, and an experience-first wedding day, symbolic elopements offer the most freedom while still feeling deeply meaningful and intentional.

Which Option Is Right for You?

There’s no “better” choice – only what feels right for you.

If you value simplicity, flexibility, and experience-first planning, a symbolic destination elopement is often the best fit. If being legally married in that country holds deep significance for you, a legal elopement may be worth the extra logistics.

Either way, your elopement is still a real wedding – and I help couples navigate both options so nothing feels confusing or overwhelming.

Another factor to consider is how your marriage will be recognized back home.

When you legally marry abroad, you may need to:

  • Register your marriage in your home country
  • Translate and authenticate documents
  • Navigate additional paperwork for name changes

Traveling & Preparing for Your Destination Elopement

Traveling for your elopement is part of the experience – not just a logistical step. With a little preparation, your trip can feel intentional, relaxed, and exciting instead of rushed or stressful. These considerations will help you plan travel that supports the kind of elopement experience you actually want.

Start Planning Early

Flights and lodging are usually less expensive further out. But, planning an international elopement can also be more difficult than planning one at home. I recommend starting your research early – about a year out. This gives you plenty of time to get everything together, and if you’re inviting guests, this gives them time to prepare too.

Planning Your Travel Timeline

When eloping internationally, giving yourself extra buffer days is key. Arriving a few days before your ceremony allows time to adjust to jet lag, scout locations, and soak in the destination without pressure.

Many couples choose to:

  • Arrive 2–4 days early
  • Schedule their ceremony mid-trip
  • Leave space afterward for honeymooning or slow exploration

This approach helps your elopement feel like a true experience – not something squeezed between flights.

Flights, Transportation & Getting Around

Transportation looks different in every country. Some destinations are best explored by rental car, while others rely heavily on trains, ferries, or local drivers.

Before booking, consider:

  • How you’ll get from the airport to your lodging
  • Whether ceremony locations require driving or hiking access
  • Road conditions, parking rules, or seasonal closures

Choosing lodging near your ceremony location can reduce stress and give you more flexibility on your elopement day.

Choosing Where to Stay

Your accommodations play a huge role in how your elopement feels. Whether it’s a cozy Airbnb, mountain lodge, or beachfront hotel, look for places that support your vision – not just convenience.

Many couples love:

  • Staying somewhere scenic where getting ready feels meaningful
  • Booking places with outdoor space, views, or privacy
  • Choosing accommodations that allow for slow mornings and relaxed evenings

Packing for a Destination Elopement

Packing intentionally can make a big difference – especially when traveling internationally.

Beyond your wedding attire, think about:

  • Layers for changing weather
  • Comfortable shoes for exploring
  • Ceremony items (vows, rings, keepsakes)
  • Travel documents and backups

If you’re eloping somewhere remote or adventurous, packing smart ensures you’re prepared without overloading yourself. Want the full list? Check it out down here.

Preparing for the Unexpected

Traveling always comes with unknowns – weather changes, flight delays, or shifting plans. Building flexibility into your trip helps you stay present and enjoy the experience even when things don’t go exactly as planned.

Some simple ways to prepare:

  • Travel insurance
  • Backup ceremony locations
  • Extra buffer days
  • A mindset that embraces flexibility

Often, the unexpected moments are what make destination elopements feel the most memorable!

Below, I’m sharing some of the best countries to elope in based on scenery, adventure, accessibility, and overall elopement experience – whether you’re dreaming of mountains, coastlines, or somewhere completely unforgettable.

ICELAND

In recent years, Iceland has exploded in popularity – and for good reason. This country feels otherworldly, with dramatic fjords, endless waterfalls, black sand beaches, volcanic landscapes, and steaming hot springs around nearly every corner. It’s one of the best countries to elope in if you love adventure and variety, because you can experience wildly different scenery all in one trip.

Iceland is perfect for couples who want their elopement to feel immersive and exploratory. You can exchange vows beside a waterfall at sunrise, hike through moss-covered lava fields, soak in a hot spring afterward, and chase the northern lights or midnight sun depending on the season. And even if hiking isn’t your thing, many of Iceland’s most iconic locations are easily accessible by car, making it ideal for couples who want epic views without long treks.

If you’re dreaming of a destination elopement that feels raw, cinematic, and completely unlike anywhere else in the world, Iceland delivers in every way.

ITALY

Italy is one of the best countries to elope for couples who want a blend of breathtaking scenery, rich culture, and unforgettable experiences. From the dramatic peaks of the Dolomites to the rolling hills of Tuscany, the colorful Amalfi Coast, and romantic lakes like Como, Italy offers an incredible variety of landscapes – all paired with world-class food and timeless charm.

An elopement in Italy can feel slow, romantic, and deeply intentional. Imagine exchanging vows in the mountains at sunrise, wandering cobblestone streets in the afternoon, and celebrating with fresh pasta and wine as the sun sets. Whether you’re drawn to alpine adventures or coastal elegance, Italy allows your elopement to feel both adventurous and indulgent.

NEW ZEALAND

New Zealand is one of the best countries to elope if adventure is at the heart of your relationship. Known for its wild landscapes and untouched beauty, this country offers snow-capped mountains, turquoise lakes, rugged coastlines, rolling hills, and remote wilderness that feels straight out of a movie.

Eloping in New Zealand is ideal for couples who want to explore. You can hike through alpine terrain, exchange vows beside a glacial lake, road-trip through jaw-dropping scenery, and experience multiple landscapes in a single day. The country is incredibly elopement-friendly, with plenty of accessible locations and a strong outdoor culture.

If you’re dreaming of a destination elopement that feels expansive, adventurous, and deeply connected to nature, New Zealand offers endless possibilities.

PATAGONIA

Patagonia isn’t just a destination – it’s an experience. Spanning southern Chile and Argentina, this remote region is one of the best places to elope for couples who crave raw, untamed landscapes and total solitude.

Think jagged mountain peaks, massive glaciers, turquoise lakes, and wide-open spaces that make you feel incredibly small in the best way. Eloping in Patagonia is perfect for couples who want their wedding day to feel bold, grounding, and completely removed from everyday life.

Because of its remoteness and unpredictable weather, Patagonia elopements require thoughtful planning – but for couples who value privacy, adventure, and dramatic scenery, the payoff is extraordinary.

GREECE

Greece is one of the best countries to elope if you’re dreaming of sun-soaked coastlines, historic beauty, and effortless romance. From whitewashed villages perched above the sea to crystal-clear water and ancient ruins, Greece offers a stunning backdrop for an intimate, meaningful elopement.

Many couples are drawn to Greek islands like Santorini or Crete, where you can exchange vows overlooking the ocean, wander charming streets, and celebrate with fresh Mediterranean food and sunset views. Greece is especially appealing for couples who want a destination elopement that feels relaxed, beautiful, and culturally rich.

If you’re envisioning a wedding day that blends romance, scenery, and a slower pace of life, Greece delivers that timeless, magical feeling.

The Best Time of Year for a Destination Elopement

When planning a destination elopement, when you go matters just as much as where. Seasons impact everything – weather, crowd levels, access, pricing, and the overall feel of your experience. Choosing the right time of year helps ensure your elopement day feels aligned, intentional, and stress-free.

Below is a breakdown of what to expect in each season when eloping internationally.

Summer Destination Elopements

Summer is one of the most popular times to elope internationally – especially in mountain, alpine, and northern destinations. Long daylight hours, easier access to remote locations, and generally stable weather make summer ideal for adventure-forward elopements.

This season works especially well for places like:

  • Iceland
  • The Dolomites
  • Patagonia (December–February in the Southern Hemisphere)
  • New Zealand (December–February)

The biggest tradeoff? Crowds and higher travel costs. Popular destinations tend to be busier in summer, which means timing and location choice become extra important if privacy matters to you.

Summer elopements are perfect for couples who want maximum access, epic landscapes, and long, story-filled days.

Shoulder Season Destination Elopements (Spring & Fall)

Spring and fall – often called shoulder seasons – are some of the best-kept secrets for destination elopements. These seasons offer fewer crowds, softer light, and more flexibility, often with lower travel costs.

Fall destination elopements can be especially magical, with warm tones, changing foliage, and cooler temperatures in many regions. Spring brings fresh landscapes and blooming scenery, though weather can be more unpredictable depending on the destination.

Shoulder seasons are ideal for couples who:

  • Want fewer people around
  • Love moody or romantic atmospheres
  • Value flexibility and quieter experiences

This season works beautifully in places like Italy, Greece, and parts of New Zealand – with thoughtful planning around weather and access.

Winter Destination Elopements

Winter destination elopements are for couples who crave something unique, intimate, and a little unconventional. While winter limits access in some regions, it opens the door to dramatic scenery, snow-covered landscapes, and far fewer tourists.

Winter can be perfect for:

  • Snowy mountain elopements
  • Northern destinations with winter light and ice features
  • Warm-weather destinations where winter is peak season (like Thailand or parts of Greece)

Because winter elopements require more flexibility, backup plans, and weather awareness, they’re best suited for couples who value experience over predictability.

When done thoughtfully, winter destination elopements can feel incredibly cozy, cinematic, and unforgettable.

Frequently Asked Questions About Eloping Abroad

Planning an elopement abroad often comes with extra questions – from legal requirements and travel logistics to timelines and vendor coordination. Below are the most common questions couples ask when planning an international elopement, along with straightforward, experience-based answers to help you feel confident every step of the way.

No – and most couples don’t. Many choose to complete the legal paperwork at home and treat their ceremony abroad as a symbolic experience. This allows for far more flexibility and removes the stress of navigating foreign marriage laws, translations, and waiting periods. Your ceremony is still deeply meaningful – the legality just happens elsewhere.

It can be, but it doesn’t have to be. Some couples spend less than they would on a traditional wedding, while others choose to invest more into travel, experiences, and photography. Costs depend on the country, season, length of stay, and what matters most to you – whether that’s luxury lodging, adventure activities, or a slower, more immersive trip.

Absolutely. Eloping abroad doesn’t mean you have to be alone. Some couples invite a small group for the ceremony and spend the rest of the trip adventuring privately, while others plan a multi-day experience with loved ones. The key is choosing a location and timeline that feels comfortable and intentional for everyone involved.

Language barriers are common – and manageable. Many elopement destinations are accustomed to international travelers, and vendors often speak English. When needed, translators or bilingual officiants can be arranged. For symbolic ceremonies, language concerns are even less of an issue.

Most couples start planning 9–12 months ahead, especially if travel, peak seasons, or guest coordination are involved. This allows time to secure accommodations, flights, permits (if required), and vendors – and often results in better pricing and less stress overall.

It depends on the location. Some countries and specific ceremony spots require permits, especially in national parks or protected areas. Others are more flexible. Researching this early – or working with someone who knows the process – helps avoid surprises and ensures everything is done responsibly.

Weather is always part of the adventure, especially when traveling internationally. The best approach is flexibility: building buffer days into your trip, choosing locations with nearby backups, and embracing the experience rather than fighting it. Some of the most memorable elopements happen in unexpected conditions.

Yes – and that’s one of the biggest perks. Many couples structure their elopement at the beginning or middle of their trip, then spend the rest of the time exploring, resting, and celebrating together. It turns your wedding into a full experience rather than a single moment.

Absolutely. Whether your ceremony is legal or symbolic, your commitment, vows, and experience are real. An elopement isn’t defined by location or guest count – it’s defined by intention, meaning, and how the day feels to you.
